How long does it take to get officer promotions in the military?

It depends. Promotions are made based on merit, experience, qualification and openings. Politicking is involved as well. Some people are promoted quickly; others take long to work through the ranks.

Officer promotions are based on time, they differ depending on what rank you are up for next, but I think it is normally 2-3 years.

Promotions for officers may depend on certain situations. Some promotions are automatic after a certain period of time, and other promotions are based on the service members accomplishments. These accomplishments will be assesed by a board and they decide if that member will be promoted or not.

It varies, and depends upon a number of factors. The lower the rank, the faster the promotions can come. The exact job that an officer has also plays a role, as well as how well he does it. Small specialties or special forces have slower promotions.
