How long does a fever normally last in children?

My son has now had a fever for 7 days. The doctor saw him on Day 6 and said it's just a virus and that it would improve by the next day, but it hasn't.

A fever can last a few hours or for many days, depending on the cause. There are all kinds of viruses that manifest in many different ways. The fever and aches should respond to Tylenol. If there's still no improvement, call the physician.

It depends on the degree of the fever. If it's just 99-100 degrees, then the doctor is probably accurate. But fevers generally should not last more than 3-4 days, especially if it's a high fever. (This is mostly from personal experience, I do not work in the medical field)

Viruses are peculiar in that they can last for a day or persist. Children sometimes get viral fevers that will last as long as 10 days. If the fever persists beyond that, you need to contact the doctor again, especially if your son is experiencing no improvement.

I went back to the doctor as he was still feverish and complaining of sore throat and stomach and he was diagnosed with mesenteric adenitis. Was on antibiotics and is now ok.  add a comment

It is unusual for a fever to last more than seven days. Since the fever still hasn't improved, it would be wise to call your doctor again. A long-lasting fever can be a symptom of something more serious than just a common virus.

There is no acceptable length of duration. Fever is a symptom that there's something wrong and body reaction against an antigen. The antigen if bacterial is treated by an antibiotic and a fever reliever. However, for a virus, the antigen is normally self limiting and the fever decreases on its own but if persistent you can seek a second opinion.
