I DWI can stay on your record for a set amount of time, as in some states, or it can stay on your record indefinitely. It varies by state, however. Commonly, in states that have a time limit, it is 7 years, but it can affect you for years after.

How long a DWI stays on your record depends on the independent laws your individual state has. They dont just go away. The general rule of thumb is the DWI goes away in 3 years, or it is not judged as bad. If you're not sure you can always obtain a copy of your driving record!

Except in special circumstances, a DWI conviction will be on your criminal record forever. Some states apply points to your drivers license for driving related law violations. The points from a DWI will be on your license for 2 to 5 years, depending on the state issuing the license.

It is up to each state to decide how long a DWI or DUI stays on your record. DWIs will not be removed, typically, unless you file with a lawyer for a process called expungement. If the DWI is older, potential employers and the like might not see it on their checks--typically only covering a three to five year span.
