How long do you need to smoke an entire pig?

I would like to smoke a pig in the ground for my husband big 50th birthday bash.

Depending on how close the actual pig is to the heat source will vary the amount of time to smoke the entire pig. Usually it will take approximately 2 hours but just keep an eye on it. Pig will be done when the it has turned a nice brown color.

she asked for an entire pig, not a .5 rack of ribs, depending on weight you will 1.5 hrs per Lb estimate 16hrs for a whole pig  add a comment

You can roast it in the ground, but you can't smoke it if it's buried. The exact answer depends on its weight, but figure most of a day at least.

Dry the pig and brush with oil and season with salt and pepper. Let coals burn til lightly ashed over. Smoke pig til browned (2 hours), brush on a sauce every half hour for the next three hours. To test if done, meat should come off bone with a little tug.
