Depending on your location, you will pay property taxes for as long as you own the property. Property taxes provide revenue for the municipality to pay for services, schools, parks, etc.

They are due on a quarterly basis or semi-annual basis depending on your town. Usually they are due in 30 days from receipt of the property tax bill in the mail.

Property taxes not paid when due will be subject to a late fee. Each month taxes remain unpaid will incur additional late fees. After two years of unpaid property tax your property may be listed in the local newspaper, and put up for sale at public auction for the amount of the unpaid taxes.

It varies by municipality. But in this economy, municipalities aren't wasting much time in taking over properties and reselling them as a result of delinquent taxes.
