The light from the sun creates a shadow when the light intersects something that blocks it and leaves a dark area underneath. The object also blocks the heat from the sun which is why shade trees are cooler and a nice place to relax out of the sun. Even clouds create shadows when they are between us and the sun.

Shadows occur when the light from a light source(like the sun) is blocked by another object(like a tree). Since light travels in straight lines, this creates a region of space shaped like the intervening object in which there is less light. This region is the object's shadow.
