Meat is a good source of protein and other nutrients, but many people who are vegetarians safely live without meat their entire lives. Some people who are raised vegetarians by their parents have never eaten meat. The key is to make sure you are getting the essential proteins you need from a variety of sources in non-meat foods.

There are many alternatives to meat. Do your research ( library, internet). Foods with protein include tofu, temph, seitan. Whole foods as well, beans, vegetables. The list is huge.

As long as vegetarians eat a variety of healthy foods, they are probably even healthier than meat eaters. Vegetarians actually get far better nutrition. To get your protein, eat a variety of nuts, beans, legumes, and organic dairy products. Eat fortified cereals and breads, this will help too.

Meat has few equals in providing both protein and iron. It would be extraordinarily difficult to ensure you get enough of either of these on a vegetarian diet.
