To install wallpaper, the wall has to be clean and smooth. Scrape any peeling paint, use spackling compound to fill and cracks or holes, then sand the spackling compond until the wall is smooth. Wash the wall before installing the wallpaper. Since this is a kitchen, the walls will have to be washed regularly, consider vinyl wallpaper.

I would start by resurfacing the walls. Make the walls smooth. You will have to mud and repeatedly sand the walls. You also want to check that the walls are level with each other. If they are not your wallpaper will look lopsided. I wouldn't reccomend doing this project without experience.

Sand the walls if they have a glossy paint on them, if the paint is matte you can start right in washing them with warm soap and water. When they're thoroughly dry you should hang a wallpaper liner, particularly if your new wallpaper is lightly colored. You can then hang the new wallpaper over the liner.

First level out the walls as much as you can. Plaster holes and cracks. Let dry. Pick a paper that will not show all the imperfections. Not a shiny paper.

Use a steamer (which can be rented at a hardware store) to remove older layers. You may add flat paneling to stabilize the walls then add paper to the panels.

You may be able to get buy with hanging wallpaper liner first. This product will hide texture, dings and small dents. It comes in varying thicknsses and is installed much the same way as wallpaper. For more heavily damaged areas, you may need to replace your wallboard or backerboard to achieve a smooth finish.

The best method is to work with clean and sanded walls. By high quality wallpaper from a local supplier where you will also purchase the highest quality wallpaper paste. Start in one corner of the kitchen and past up sheet after sheet until you fill the walls with every inch being covered with the wallpaper.

wall papering is going out the window but to wall paper you will need to make sure that the walls are clean and if they are in bad shape you should make sure to get a good quality glue that will hold the wall paper to the walls much easier
