in the 100 meter freestyle or relay he swims under 48 seconds, because he is making quick strokes in a shorter amount of distance. So if you equate this distance and the amount of seconds in which it is covered, it would amount to his swimming under 5 miles per hour.

Gold medalist winner Michael Phelps swims at about 407 miles per hour which is on a par with a very quick walk.
