How far in the future can weather forecasts be accurate?

A meteorologist uses three techniques to forecast weather, observation, analysis, and extrapolations of statistical data. They use tools to forecast the weather up to seven days. Beyond that, an agency called the Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service uses past statics data to predict up to three months out.

Some people swear by the farmer's almanac and that is a year in advance. Sometimes it is accurate. Others swear by computer forecasts. Personally, I think that weather forcasts can be like broken clocks-they are right some of the time.

The overall quality of an ensemble forecast depends on both its reliability and its sharpness. For a given level of reliability more sharpness means better forecasts, and vice versa. Another way of saying this is that when we see the ensemble plotted on a fan chart or spaghetti plot
