it really depends upon how much light you are wanting to get in the room, talk to lighting expert and figure out how many cans you want then space accordingly.

There is no set distance or applicable code relating to how far apart recessed lighting should be spaced, it is more a matter of personal taste. You will however, need to consider the spacing of ceiling joist and the outside dimension of your fixtures and how it will affect the desired lay-out.

Divide distance between walls by number of lamps, plus one (ex. 10ft/[3lmps. +1]=2. 5ft. ). Place at resultant intervals. This will allow one extra interval at each end for even spacing. Good luck!

The spacing of the lights is determined by the amount of space you have to work with. The diameter of effective light will help in deciding the best spacing option for your lighting needs.

Recessed lights are funnel-shaped fixtures installed in a ceiling. Boasting a width of approximately 130 degrees. Pull cable from the power source to the first recessed light. Pull cable from the power source to the first recessed light. Leave about 18" of the wire hanging from the ceiling.

4" cans will require at least a 6" drop, but I'm not sure I'd go that way. It's not mandatory that your wires be hidden inside walls and ceilings; you could also use surface-mounted conduit/raceway to get legal. I think you can put recessed lights into the existing ceiling.
