An infared sensor sends the information over the airwaves and to a television sensor in the television that reads the data.

Most remotes run on one of the three major wireless technology. Infered, radio, or bluetooth which is technically a branded form of radio. Each one of these deferent technologies are jsut diferent ways of sending bits of information over the air to the TV. Reading some wikipedia articals about each one of these technologies can tell how they work.
