Propellant burns, creating an explosive reaction, ie creating energy. The force of that energy being expelled creates a forward motion. The force of the energy displaces mass, Einstein's theory which made the possibility of space travel viable.

In the vacuum of space, one you start to accelerate. You keep your top speed forever unless acted upon by another force. On earth the gravity and air slow you down, space has neither.
