How does something biodegrade?

Biological material is made up of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids (fat). Bacteria and fungi secret enzymes that break these components down and convert them in the end to carbon dioxide.

Some thing bio-degrades when it is broken down into simpler substances like Carbon Dioxide and Water under the influence of bacteria and fungi along with sunlight. Note that plastics are usually non-biodegradable.
