A French drain is designed very simplistically. It's a sloped ditch lined with cobble stones. You collect them and run the channel down and out to where ever you want the ditch to empty out into. Usually drains are two feet wide, with what are called river rock lining the inside of the drain.

A french drain is basically a sloping ditch, lined with cobble, to collect run off and channel it to where ever you want it to go. Generally, a drain would be a minimum of two feet wide, with large cobble (river rock) lining it to prevent erosion. Placing weed block down before the cobble would be a good idea, too.
