You should take some soil to the nursery and get it tested. If its okay you don't need fertilizer, if it is not that they should tell you what you need. Rain water is great for plants and if possible I would set out containers when it rain to collect. Regular water sometimes does not have enough nutrients.

How does fertilizer help plants grow bu insuring the plant ill receive all the nutrients it needs to grow. Fertilizer also contain potassium for root development and manganese and zinc for healthy growth. Most fertilizer is mixed with water or soil and then heavly watered. The nutrients are absorbed by the plant through the root system.
