The hair cells are very tightly clumped together causing hair to curl. When a Brazilian hair relaxer is applied it loosens the bonds between the hair cells and hair then lays down instead of curling like it normally would have. Application must be followed as the instructions say they are.

It works by spreading a keratin protein into your hair and slowly targets the cells in your scalp. The keratin is spread to the scalp.

The Brazilian hair relaxer is actually an intense keratin treatment. Keratin is a component of hair. This treatment, which coats the hair, can be applied to virgin or relaxed hair. It is applied by flat ironing the hair at around 450 degrees farenheit. The result is smooth, silky, straightened hair.

I think what you are referring to are Brazilian Keratin Treatment. Its an great alternative to someone who doesn't want the permanent effect of a relaxer. The straightening effect usually lasts up to 5 months.
