Academia requires one to format essays using APA-style. This is generally true based upon the type of class a student is taking, such as psychology. Writing is done in the third person and the use of references, pagination, and other formatting (e.g., quotes) adheres to standards established by the American Psychological Association.

An APA-style essay is one written according to the conventions of the American Psychological Association, commonly used for social sciences such as sociology and, of course, psychology. Mostly, they cite the year the research was published in the body of the writing, not just at the end. Online guides available.

APA is the American Psychological Association and APA style is a way of writing, citing sources, and formatting. The "APA Style" website offers a great overview and guide for writing APA style. If you prefer a book, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is helpful too. Both sources will help you format your paper.
