Start with one milligram a day, and use only one pill. Then gradually, decrease the pill by one day. Keep a journal and record any side affects from the weaning.

The best way to wean off of any benzodiazepine, including Xanax, is slowly. One milligram/day is a relatively small amount, so the chance of success is high, if you dedicate yourself. Start by cutting your dose down to just 3/4 of a pill for a week, then half.

You should consult a physician about weaning off Xanax. Consideration is given to how long you've taken it, other drugs you take and your physical and psychological condition. Even if the physician didn't prescribe, s/he can help you. It is likely a decreasing dose will be prescribed over many weeks.

Xanax is a potent and short-acting anti-anxiety medication, it has a quite high addictive potential. A good strategy to wean off is to switch to a low dose of a longer acting and less potent drug like Valium before completely stopping the medication. For easier transition use herbal remedies.
