In you start menu go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map. Open it, find the font and character you want. Click on it, and press select. Now, press copy, and you can paste it where you need it. If you know the character code, just hold down Fn and alt, and type in the code.

This can be done by holding the ALT key and then entering a sequence of numbers for the character you wish to type. Search 'special keyboard characters' in Google for a full list of these codes.

The basic character layout is the same on a laptop but the keys are just placed differently. So you can use the same Alt and a number for special characters.
