How do you turn off hardwired smoke alarms?

You must find the power supply which will be nearby the control unit of the alarms. If it's a large building go to the porter's room or security and if it's a house usually this stuff is found in the garage, the entry or the fuses box. Unplug the supply gently and that's it (electrical blackout simulation)

Safety isn't thoughtless. After eliminating the risk of smoke from an out of control fire, you can switch off the central power supply (breaker) AND open the battery door to disconnect the 9 volt battery. This will silence the offending unit until the repair can be made.

It is not safe to turn off your smoke alarm, most have a silencer button but you can also turn off the circuit link to the smoke alarm.

To turn off your hardwired smokes alarms, you will need to do one of two things. The first is to turn of the circut of electricity to that smoke alarm. You can do this at the breaker box, then simply take the alarm off the wall

While I'm uncertain of the reason to shut off the hard wired smoke alarms, there really are only a few ways to do this. If, when the alarms were installed they were wired through a light switch, you can simply shut off the switch. The only other way to shut them off is to disconnect the power supply.

I sure hope they weren't wired through a switch. That'd definitely be a code violation, for reasons that should be pretty self evident.  add a comment

If it is hardwired it should have a fuse that can be turned off. go to the circuit breaker and turn off the circuit breaker

Why do you want to? That is dangerous. Do not turn off them off. If they are going off because of cooking, then open windows and learn how to cook without creating so much smoke. If you turn them off and a fire does break out, a disaster can occur.

Ever made stir-fry? How about a medium-rare steak?

I just had my hardwired smoke alarm set off by an *empty pan* that was heating.  add a comment

The new Bug Foggers are safe around pilots but unfortunately the dry fog makes your smoke alarms go off :-/  add a comment

A level of safety is decreased with shutting down. However, after obvious problems have been eliminated (fire), silencing them at the power source until that water leak into the unit is fixed is a thoughtfully safe thing to do. Fix the problem and turn them back on. Safety isn't thoughtless.

Go to the circuit box for your house or apartment. Find the circuit that is wired to the smoke alarms. Turn it off.
