There is no way around taking antibiotics if you get strep throat. This condition can be very serious if not properly treated and can affect the heart. If the antibiotic you take has unbearable side effects let your physician know so that he can try something different.

If you don't like taking antibiotics, strep throat will eventually clear by itself but that will also lead to serious complications such as fever and can even lead to kidney infections.

A strep throat usually clears up in 3 to 7 days with or without treatment. Antibiotics are given to clear the strep up faster. Occassionally complications can develop from a strep throat infection. A great throat soother is to gargle with warm salt water. Also drink plenty of fluids and rest.

Untreated strep cells can lay dormant in the heart muscles for years and cause heart disease later in life. Antibiotics kills the strep once and for all.

If it really is strep throat, amoxicillin, even though it is an antibiotic, is the best means of treating it. However, sans prescription, then be sure to gargle frequently with warm salt water. Doing so will help clean out your throat and alleviate some of the irritation.
