There are many treatment options for fat pad atrophy. The key is promotion of healing with rest and decreasing aggravation to the heel. Treatment options include simply using trainer's tape over the heel, plastic heel cups, and foam or gel inserts. Also try to ice your heel and restrict exposure to hard surfaces while barefoot.

Fat pad atrophy is often treated by using anti-inflammatory medication and placing foam or gel pads, or special heel cups, in the patient's shoes to cushion the heel. Additionally, patients are advised against walking barefoot on hard surfaces, which can aggravate the condition. The basic goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Atrophy of the fat pads on the foot can be treated in two main ways: either with surgery or with the use of various types of shoe inserts. When deciding between these two methods, you generally start with the more conservative shoe inserts, only considering surgery if this is unsuccessful with pain relief.
