Treat a cough by drinking lots of water. Hot liquids seem to help alot too. You should also be taking a medicine that helps break up the mucus in your chest.

There are many cough preparations on the market. There is an old time remedy many swear by. You need some brown sugar, a little water and a large cut up onion. Cook all together and it makes a thick syrup. I don't know exact measurements so you judge.

If you have a fever, take Acetaminophen and ask your doctor about epinephrine inhalers to reduce swelling. Additionally, keep your bedroom moist with a vaporizer and drink more liquids.

The "barking" of a lingering cough is actually excess mucous which has collected in the lung from a cold. You could try Mucinex, but the cough should clear up eventually on its own.
