Make sure that you sit or lie in a position so that your head is higher than your heart, this will stem the flow of blood. Tilt your head forward and pinch the nostrils together just below the bony part of nose. Apply pressure and once the blood has stopped apply a cold compress to the nose.

Sittng with the head tilted back and pinching the nose can help stop a nose bleed or slow it down until immediate medical attention can be obtained.

Firstly bending or tilting head forward is necessary to prevent blood from obstructing the airway. Then, pressure should be applied on the soft part of nose by pinching it for 20 minutes. Sucking ice helps in blood clotting and thereby stop bleeding. Ice can be applied on forehead and at the back of the neck.
