How do you replace McPherson struts?

to replace a strut under the hood in the engine compartment on the top of the strut towers remove the 3 bolts, then remove wheel and remove 2 bolts

there is 2 bolts that attach it to the spindle you will need to remove them, then there are 3 bolts on the top of your strut tower that will need removed, you will then need a strut spring compressor to compress the spring and take the nut off the top. for installation do the same thing just in reverse.

Replacing rear struts can be easy on trucks and SUV's as they are just bolt off then bolt back on. On most cars you will need to rent a spring compressor to uninstall and reinstall the springs which is required to replace the struts.

If you take a look at the box the new ones came in there will be a diagram on how to remove the old ones and install the new ones.

McPherson strut is first removed from steering knuckle and upper mount. the spring is removed and installed on new strut, then strut is reinstalled at knuckle and upper mount.

You will need to either rent a spring compressor from a parts store or purchase one. Then you jack up the vehicle remove the old and replace with the new.
