How do you replace a whirlpool water heater anode rod?

Turn off water pressure and bleed system pressure. Turn off water heater power at the breaker and verify with a multimeter. The anode rod has a hex head fitting at the tip of the tank. Use a hex socket wrench to remove. Lubricate threads on the new rod and install.

You will notice the control board opening panel on the front of your unit. The rod will be behind this access panel on the top hand side, it might be hard to see without a flashlight. You will need to remove the two bolts and install the new one.
