Physically broken hard drives are very difficult to repair and generally have to be sent to a specialist. A lot of problems with hard drives can be solved by formatting (erasing) the drive and reinstalling the software and documents from backup. If that fails, buy a new drive and install in the laptop.

If it is a software issue, then a recovery disk can be used to reformat the drive. If it is a hardware issue, then the drive may need to be removed and replaced.

You can run a disk checker to troubleshoot bad sectors in your hard drive, but if something is physically wrong, there's usually nothing you can do. Even experts have to just buy a new hard drive, this is why it is almost essential if you do a lot of computer work to keep a backup of all your data.
