How do you rekey a Kwikset lock?

Install the lock and insert the key by turning right 1/4 turn. Push the smartkey tool to the smartkey hole. Pull out the old key by removing smartkey tool. Insert the new key and turn it left 1/4 turn. Finally insert the new key and it will work good.

You take the Kwikset key and insert it in the slot along with the original key and remove the core. Now you insert a new core with a new key.

I found numerable excellent how-two sites and a You Tube that can walk you through this. Best way is to go to Kwiksets website, these locks were made to be able to do this, if it is a Kwikset Smartkey- that was one of their marketing points. You will need a functioning key, and the Smartkey LearnTool.

Insert current key into lock, quarter turn key to the right into the learning position. Keep current key in place inserting smart key right above the keyhole as far as it can go, then remove it from lock without turning it. Insert new key quarter turning to left an back to the right then left to complete re-key steps.
