To refinish the lacquer on a rifle stock you will need to sand it starting with 80 grit and move on to finer grades until completely smooth. Clean the stock with mineral spirits then wipe down with a tack rag. Apply a layer of lacquer and let dry, wet sand and buff. Continue for each layer until finished.

Basically you remove the old lacquer either by hand sanding or using a stripping agent. Then apply a fresh coat of paint onto the stock.

Select the desired wood stain, Using a brush, apply to stock. Go to work applying lacquer to the stock, and let that dry as well. To protect the wood, at least two or three layer is needed. When the stock is finally fully refinished and dry, screw the buttplate back on.

First, apply finish remover and special scrubbing pad to remove varnish. Second, eradicate oil stains using any type of hot air source. Next, sand gently, being careful of the buttplate and checkering. Use a cloth to remove dust and a good grain filler on stock. Finally put on finish, about 3 coats, allowing finish to dry before applying next coat.
