A good basic shadow application begins with sweeping a light color, could be matte or shimmery, all over the eyelid from lash line to brow bone. After that add a medium to deep color from the lash line to where you feel your eyeball end, just the mobile part of your lid.

Sweep a lighter color of shadow over your eyelid and then smudge a darker shadow in the same color family as the first in the crease just above your eyelid.
