In order to properly aerate your fish bowl, the surface tension of the water must break. Keep in mind, a heated tank will require more aeration. Therefore, for small fish bowls or tanks, install a basic "hang on back" filter. For larger tanks, in addition to the filter, install an air stone, aerating ornament or bubble wall.

The surface area should be large enough for adequate gas exchange. Also, something that circulates the water well, such as an air diffuser or small power filter, helps with aeration.

You will need an air pump, some tubing and and air stone. Plug the tubing into the air pump and then plug the airstone into the tubing. Place the airstone in the tank, and plug in the air pump. This will start the bubble in the tank and your bowl will be aerated.

An air pump with an air stone will keep your fishbowl aerated. Also, live plants may be used to help aerate.
