If the children are younger, you can make them responsible for their own actions. They could write letters home to their parents explaining what they did wrong or miss out of special activities like recess, gym, and music class. If the punishment means something to the child, they are more likely to make sure that they follow the rules.

If you are spending an excessive amount of time on discipline you need to either increase the punishment or get parents involved sooner. Children will learn self-discipline when it benefits them to behave and it is a detriment to misbehave. Stiffer punishments and parental involvement will work wonders.
