Begin you search at local rescues and shelters. These animals were either saved from or are at risk of being put to sleep if they do not find a home. The staff at these facilities are often able to tell you about the dog's personality. Research breed characteristics because even mixed breeds will carry some of the predominant traits.

Just pick a dog that you're comfortable with and can handle. Breed isn't really important just as long as you have patience and a lot of love.

There is no right or wrong way of picking out a dog. Usually people pick them out by favorite breed, favorite color, or personality. See if you can play with the dogs at your local animal shelter or at a pet store, then chose your favorite!

You are going to have to ask yourself some important questions. What size dog do I want? What type of dog do I want?

Your living situation should determine the kind of dog. If you live on a farm then go for a big dog. If an apartment then choose a small dog.
