The traditional way is with a tube with an opening with 1 inch of surface area. You then measure the depth of the water that is in the tube. This will let you compare your results to others. However, in practice, if you don't care about comparing results with others, using any consistent and standard container will work.

Rainfall is measured using a device called a rain gauge that is placed in an open and unobstructed area. The rain gauge consists of a funnel attached to a graduated container from which the level of rainfall can be read and reported in units of millimeters or inches.

Rainfall can be a hard thing to measure, unless you have the proper tools. One of the best ways to measure rainfall is with a container. Find a container with accurate measurements, and put it out in an open space to catch the rain. The water level will show approximately how much rainfall there has been.
