The horse has to want to run, and have a competitive spirit. They need training to build muscle and stanima and a light whip to give encouragement, when they're flagging.

Gradual work on strength and building wind. Daily work outs, called "jogging" aimed at increasing endurance help. Make sure horse is fed high quality hay. Careful cooling out post jogging, and warming up are CRUCIAL. Train (ie: take horse at fast clip) once a month. Build up to this slowly.

You can't 'make' any horse fast. If you are using your Standardbred for racing, make sure you have a good trainer. Conformation plays a huge part in how fast a horse is; if he has clean conformation, is not sore, and is trained correctly, he will be fast.

You can't just MAKE your horse fast. The horse is either fast or it's not. Standardbreds are normally used as pacing horses so they're not the fastest horses.

Speed is something the horse will have or it won't. Some people use illegal drugs and steroids to speed up their horses but not only are they illegal and detectable but they can also hurt your horse in the long run. Joint Supplements are legal and are something that can help with speeds and make the horses joints more fluid.

Conditioning first for cardio health, gradually increasing the distance jogging. Begin adding in speed work. Examine diet, feed excellent quality hay and concentrated feeds. Carefully cool out horse post workout.
