First, one must have mortar and blocks to start. Then mix up the mortar to a good consistency by adding water. Once done, put the mortar down using a trowel in a line where the block is going. Then lay the block down on top of the mortar in a straight line. Be sure to stagger them as you go.

It's essential the place where the block will be laid be carefully prepped. It must be cleared and leveled. It must be filled with an underlayment of gravel and sand.

The first thing you thing you need is a good level concrete footer or slab. You need to have your mortar mixed properly. Next you need to start at one corner and work out in two directions. Make sure the first row is level and square and check each block.

The starting course must be on concrete. Use mortar which should be mixed to the point where it will stay on the trowel. Lay your corners first so you can get straight course lines and make sure the corner courses are plumb and level to each other and the layout.
