The positive battery cable on a car is always marked with a red color cable as opposed to the negative one which is always black in color to differentiate the two of them.

Anyone can easily identify a positive battery cable by its color. A negative cable will be black, and a positive cable will be red or orange. In addition, look for the plus sign. If you see the plus sign, think positively, because you have successfully identified the positive battery cable.

The positive battery cable is usually coated in red sheathing. It is red because red means hot lead. The negative cable is usually coated black and is a ground wire.

You should be able to tell which is which by looking at the cable and terminals. The positive or "hot" cable should have some type of red cover or "+" symbol on it. It should run over to the alternator. The negative or "ground" should be black with a "-" symbol. It should run to the body or engine block.
