After 75 days, start looking for a ripe melon- 80 is the standard. The curly green tendrils will start to yellow, indicating that the plant is no longer feeding. The rule of thumb is the same as in the market- thump the melon, you want a nice hollow sound. The color will be dulling from shiny, and the underside yellowing.

I watermelon is ripe and ready to be picked when the area resting on the ground turns a yellowish color rather than white. A ripe watermelon will also sound hollow when thumped, though this takes some experience to recognize. Also, if the watermelon separates from the vine easily, it is probably ripe.

Usually a watermelon is ready to pick about three months after you plant it. Check underneath your watermelon. A white appearance indicates it isn't ripe yet; when it gradually turns yellowish it's ready to eat. Usually the tried and true thump that produces a hollow sound works like a charm!

Right time after stem curls and turns brown. The place where the watermelon touches the ground will become yellow. Make a rap with your knuckles and listen for dull, hollow sound.
