Most commonly, lactose intolerance is characterized by stomach upset after ingestion of food products high in dairy (or lactate) content.

Normally if you are lactose intolerant you will get very bad stomach aches or indigestion whenever you eat milk products. A doctor should be able to diagnose this easily.

Only a doctor can tell for absolute certain, but you can get a pretty good idea on your own. You should simply eliminate products containing lactose from his diet for awhile, and see if his symptoms (usually diarrhea and stomach upset) improve.

Well, first you must consider if your son has had any symptoms when eating or drinking something with lactose. If he has, take him to a doctor. There is a blood test that can give you a definite answer.

If consuming milk products causes stomach issues then this is most likely the case. Test without any milk products for a while and then with lactose free products.

The most common symptoms of lactose intolerance are abdominal pain, diarrhea and flatulence when consuming milk and milk products (which contain lactose). The person may also experience abdominal bloating, distension and nausea. However, this does not confirm actual lactose intolerance, so you should go to a doctor for formal testing.
