How do you know if you need a new thermostat?

My house does not seem to be getting as warm as the thermostat says it is.

You will know if you need a new thermostat because the house will not be as warm as it says it is.

It may not be the thermostat if it were it would either come on and stay or go off and stay off if you have to keep adjusting the thermostat for your temperature then go back over and turn it off thats the thermostat.

You can check it by some kind of regular thermometer. If the current thermostat is just old and out of calibration you may be able to correct the calibration. But if it is too old it will be better to replace with a new programmable thermostat which is relatively inexpensive.

Generally, thermostats fail in two ways. 1) they quit working entirely. 2) they quit working in one mode or another, the so-called drift or calibration is about 3/4 of a degree and isn't noticeable by most humans. A change in performance of your system should be investigated by a professional.
