How do you know if you need a new park or neutral switch on a 98 Ford Escort?

You would have to remove the switch and check with an OHM meter, however, it would be obvious if you have to wiggle the shifter to engage the starter. There is also a switch attached to the brake pedal in some models and clutches for Manuals you should check.

The purpose of a neutral safety switch is to keep the vehicle from being started in an gear that could cause a vehicle to move unintentionally. If it is working properly the car should only start in park and neutral. To check it simple try to start it in another gear while in an empty area while holding the brakes.

If you vehicle is not starting when you turn the key. Sometimes you mess around with the position of the shifter to get it to start. Or your shifer sticks.

Typically when your neutral safety switch is going out the car will stop starting every time you turn the key. You can also check it with a multimeter.
