When installing roof mounted hvac systems i'd say you're right, It's best to keep them away from tree lines or places where animals might get into them. I would suggest keeping them in a place secure from the elements if possible, this will prevent fires, electrical damage and a plethora of other undesirable things.

Generally place a condensing unit/package unit where it will not be in direct sunlight for at least a portion of the day, but the efficiency loss is only about 5%.

If you are wanting to install this type of roof system then you will need to get screws and a hammer.
