You will need to separate the cord at the point where you want the switch and then cut ONE strand of the cord. Strip about 1/2" of the insulation from each cut end. Your switch will have a connecting system for the cut ends. Attach the cut ends and screw the switch housing onto the cord.

Find the place for the switch. Separate the cords' wires by about an inch and cut one wire midpoint of the separation. Unscrew and open the switch. There are two paths for wires, one passes through, the other is switched. Lay the uncut wire in the pass-through and the cut ends in the switched. Align halves and reassemble the switch.

Make sure the cord is disconnected. Then connect the unribbed side of the cord to the switch. There is no need to cut the ribbed side of the cord.
