First thing first, whatever you do, get black soil. Works the best. Also be extremely choosy on your potter plants, 10x8 should do. While it's growing don't pick the berries. Actually, never pick the berries. No matter what. Keep them well pruned so they aren't everywhere, plus you could make pretty designs, have an elephant or something.

Place them in pots of at least ten inches in diameter and eight inches deep. Black soil works best and resign yourself never to harvest any berries.

Although juniper will survive in poor soil, your juniper will thrive with a good soil and a little sand mixed in. A soil based compost mix such as John Innes No. 3 is recommended. Place layer of gravels or shell in bottom of container for good drainage.

Place stones over the drainage holes in the container as to prevent soil-clogging and to promote good drainage. Fill the container with a mix of soil-less and soil-based compost. You can even add extra grit and sharp sand for better results.

These plants do best if you plant a couple in each container then water as necessary. Be careful how much direct sun they get or the plants will burn.

Junipers planted in containers need soil based compost. The container needs to be well drained. They can be planted any time of year. Water and fertilize regularly.

When growing juniper in containers it is best to use a soil based compost, to provide the proper drainage by adding some grit and gravel to the bottom.
