The same way you train a young horse, with patience, repetition and constant reinforcement of desired behavior. In teaching the older horse, you may have to unlearn bad habits.

You can teach older horses new tricks. Lots of love and patience is needed to work with any horse at any age. Just work go over and over in a period of time what you are training and they will soon get it. Sooner than a young horse will.

Go about it just as you would a younger one. The only difference is that you're going to need a bit more patience. When a horse learns things at an older age it often takes a bit longer.

Hopefully the older horse that you are working with has had some sort of ground work from which to build. If not, begin with work in a round pen teaching him to respond to gentle pressure (merely your presence, at first). Press the horse to work in each direction and reward him with frequent breaks. Continue to work from there.
