If you have an instant messenger,then all you have to do is log in and add the number of your friend to their info. The just chat as usual.

You can use a multitude of programs to text. The easiest way is to get an AIM account and use the messenger program to add the numbers you want to text to your buddy list. Be sure to have +1 before the 10 digit number.

A computer can't text message by itself, however there are web services - some free and some paid - that will allow you to send text messages.
