Prune during late summer or early fall. Use sharp pruning shears and make sure to leave 2-3 nodes on each branch. Do not prune the top of the plant. Make sure not to strip wood or bark from the stem. Cut back only the longest branches in one session, this will ensure that the Hibiscus will flower evenly all round.

Hibiscus is very trainable with proper pruning. First, using sharp tools, remove any damaged, diseased, or rubbing branches. Then prune the plant into shape by cutting back branches just past a bud that is heading in a preferred direction.

First, identify which branches to remove: branches that cross; are dead, diseased, or injured; and branches that grow towards the plant's center. To encourage good growth, prune about a third of older wood or any of the above mentioned wood. Throughout the growing season, pinch the branch tips. This will lead to more flowers.
