Though this dog is intelligent, this house training business may be a challange. From personal experience, a hound is somewhat hard-headed. It will take a lot of time and patience to get this dog to go to the door but it can be done. I would never recommend any kind of hound for the person who is away a lot.

Start them as a puppy, if possible. Do not rub their nose in it or hit them if they pee in the house. When you see them beginning to squat or lift a leg clap your hands to stop them from peeing, say 'Let's go potty' and take them to the door and the yard. Repetition is key.

Anticipating when your dog is going to eliminate and taking it outside before it has an accident is the best thing to do. Common times are after meals, after waking up, and after playing. Be patient- a young puppy can only hold it for a couple hours.

Training a Basset follows the same principles as any breed. Decide on what type of training, crate, yard etc, set a schedule based on meals, bedtimes- there's great advise online.

First of all put him on a schedule where he can notice what time he will eat or drink. Then as soon as he is done eating or drinking take him outside. Once he is going outside praise him as he is doing his business. Also limit his roaming in the house to a small area. Slowly increase that area.

House training a basset hound is no different than house training any other breed of dog. When you catch it going in the house, say no, and praise when it goes outside.

House training a basset hound will require you to choose a training method example a crate training method or paper training. You must learn the sign if the dog is about to go. Also schedule eating and potty trips.

For house training a basset hound, you have to show him who's the boss without being scared of him. If you show him that your scared, he will feel superior of you and in that case he will not listen at what your telling him. Be carefull with this race of dog, he can be exited sometime...

To housetrain your Basset, you should tether the dog to you when you are home so you can closely supervise. As soon as he sniffs the ground and/or starts circling, take him outside and praise him when he goes where you want. Crate him when you are out.
