The panel walls are kind of ugly.

If putting up dry wall is out of the question, consider wallpaper. You can also buy tapestries that will cover large areas of a wall.

You can try to put up photos or decorative pieces to make them look nicer or you can try painting them, just make sure you get a good paint that won't peel.

Panel walls are outdated. You can simply tare them down leaving only nail holes to fill with wall putty and a scrapper. You can also buy a primer and cover them, then paint them. You don't want to pick a dark color or it will be to close to the wood itself and not bring out enough change.

You could approach this as you would any other wall - try putting up some decorative posters, photos, or paintings on the walls to spruce things up. You could also try putting drywall over the panels.

Well just add some sort of decorations or stencils around them. How about using wall paper on top of that or pictures.

One of the best ways to handle paneled walls is to paint them a neutral solid color. This helps to neutralize the cheesy paneled look and instead the ridges in the paneling just add a decorative touch. You will need to lightly sand and prime prior to painting.
